TAILOR
Calí dos Anjos
The film is about Orlando Tailor, a young artist from Rio de Janeiro who started drawing comics to ask questions about his transsexuality and tell the stories of other trans people. The team that worked on the film is mostly made up of trans and LGBT + professionals. In addition, the film that was on the TLVFest program in 2018 joined the boycott by withdrawing from the event.
Calì dos Anjos studied Communication and Radio at the Federal University of Río de Janeiro. He worked as an editor and screenwriter and Tailor is making his debut as a director, with this film Calì was the first trans director to win the award for best director in the short films section of the Gramado Film Festival, one of the main and oldest film festivals in the South America, as well as the largest Brazilian film festival.
REBELLIOUS ESSENCE
Ana Čigon
A history of bureaucratic complications at the Cat Affairs Office when a cat appears that has been prevented from obtaining official ID due to its sexual identity. Animated short film that with irony and lightness deals with the theme of the recognition of different gender identities from public offices and bureaucracy in general. The film that was on the TLVFest program in 2019 joined the boycott by withdrawing from the event.
Ana Čigon (1982) is an artist most active in video, film and performance. She began making video art in 2007. Her projects tackle social and feminist topics, such as under-representation of women in historical narration, invisible social groups, relation subject-society, pursuit of happiness and such. Her works often contain elements of humor, irony, and satire and her artworks are not limited to one media. For her last animation Rebellious Essence, which was presented in festival programs on four continents, she received an audience choice award at Leeds Queer Film Festival in United Kingdom.
CINEMA FOUAD
Mohamed Soueid
A documentary portrait of Khaled El Kurdi, a Syrian trans woman living in Beirut where she earns a living as a domestic worker and belly dancer. Soueid shows us scenes of El Kurdi’s domestic world: eating, applying make-up, dancing in her bedroom, all while reflecting on her life and experiences. She often alludes to the aggressions she faces outside of the home—in the street—and through her adept defiance in the face of some of Soueid’s more goading questions, we recognize the echoing of these aggressions in his role as interviewer.
Mohamed Soueid (1959 Beirut) began a career as a film critic. He worked as an assistant director for a number of filmmakers. After he directed his first film “Absence” in 1990, Soueid made his own documentaries and TV work. He was known for his autobiographical trilogy full-length documentaries. His “Tango of Yearning” won the Best Documentary Director Prize at Beirut International Film Festival in 2000. Soueid directed the TV mini series drama “Women in Love”. In addition to his film and TV work, Soueid published two books on Lebanese cinema and theatres.
BLACK MAMBA
Amel Guellaty
The portrait of a young girl whose fate seems to be sealed in advance. Of humble origins, Sarra takes sewing lessons. But, struggling with her condition as a normal girl who has to settle down through an arranged marriage, Sarra finds it hard to consent to it: alongside this wise life project that her mother has drawn up for her and that she only apparently supports, she clings tenaciously to the aspiration of she. Her fundamental theme is that of women’s emancipation in the exercise of her rights.
Amel Guellaty (1988) is a Tunisian photographer and director. After studying law in Paris, she worked in cinema as an assistant on several feature films. Between 2009 and 2017 she is the author of two short documentaries, “Born in the Spring” and “The garbage collectors of the sea”. In 2017, she directed her first short fiction film Black Mamba produced by Atlas Vision. She combines cinema and photography by working on films such as L’amour des hommes by Mehdi Ben Attia.
HALF A LIFE
Tamara Shogaolu
After a traumatic encounter, a young, gay Egyptian joins the LGBT rights movement. When his safety is jeopardized, he must choose whether to stay in the country he loves or seek asylum elsewhere as a refugee. The short movie is a timely story of activism and hope, set in the increasingly dangerous, oppressive, and unstable social climate of Egypt today. The movie is a multi-award winning animated documentary short that has screened at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and others and was shortlisted for a 2017 Iris Prize.
Tamara Shogaolu is a director and artist focused on sharing intersectional stories across mediums, platforms, virtual and physical spaces in order to promote cross-cultural understanding and challenge preconceptions. She is an international director and artist at film festivals, galleries, and museums, such as the MoMa t in New York and the National Gallery of Indonesia. Tamara is the director of Queer in a Time of Forced Migration, series that follows the stories of LGBTQ refugees from Egypt, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia from the 2011 Revolutions.Tamara is based in Amsterdam, where she is Creative Director of Ado Ato Pictures.
