Urgent: Toronto Queer Film Festival Needs Your Help
Since 2016, TQFF has offered high-quality experimental and social justice-themed film & video programming by disabled, migrant, and racialized queer and trans artists. We have long been on the forefront of key issues affecting the arts sector and queer and trans community, from BDS (Boycott, Divest and Sanctions) to fights against corporate sponsorship in the arts. Because of this, we have been recognized by our funders and peers as leaders in the sector.
We have paid over $300,000 in fees to more than 400 artists, filmmakers, and activists who have presented their work at our festival. This means the average presenter receives $745 to show their work at our festival, which is 2x higher than the average presentation rate.
We have presented our programming to more than 20,000 people. As a pay-what-you-can festival, on average each audience member only pays 70 cents per ticket; this is 8x lower than the average price for other independent film festivals.
However, this year, TQFF has come to a crossroads. Like many arts organizations, we have seen our funding cut and our costs rise. We are facing more financial barriers than ever before. Right now, our organization may not be able to continue after our 2025 festival.
Our community-based festival is supported entirely by public funding, community partnerships, and individual donations. We need your help raising $25,000 by the end of April or else TQFF may not be able to continue in 2026.
Three Ways to Support TQFF:
- Buy a festival ticket: This year, one festival ticket gets you access to over a dozen different programs
- Make a donation:
- $10 allows one low-income audience member to attend one screening for free
- $30 allows one low-income audience member to attend an entire day for free
- $100 allows one low-income audience member to attend the entire festival for free
- Become a monthly supporter:
- $10/month allows us to provide open captioning for one film in the programme
- $15/month allows us to provide live-captioning for artist talks and panels
- $50/month allows us to provide a free N95 mask to each audience member
- $60/month: screening and artist fees for one short film
- $100/month: screening and artist fees for one feature film
TQFF is incorporated as a not-for-profit organisation in the province of Ontario, and is unfortunately at this time unable to provide tax receipts for donations.
