Do I Need to Fucking Repeat Myself: DIY Contact Printing for Angry Transsexuals

This workshop is open to transfems only, with half of the tickets being available to the public and the other half going to grassroots trans organizations in Toronto. Because tickets are limited, don’t sign up if you aren’t part of the communities this workshop serves. But do tell all the transfems in your life about it!
Taking Susan Stryker’s My Words to Victor Frankenstein as a starting point, this session blends theory with practice to explore how trans women are required to justify their existence over and over again.
Pt I. – Theory
The first half of the session explores the labour of repeating oneself to enact trans femininity: we repeat our pronouns, our medical care, our bodies, and our embodied expressions and experiences. We not only do this because it feels good, but because trans femininity is contingent upon this required act of repetition.
Pt. II – Practice
In the second half of the session, participants will take this theory into the darkroom, experimenting with a DIY contact printing setup and working towards the creation of a short and collaborative contact-printed film.
By the end of the workshop, participants will have the skills and knowledge required to create their own contact prints in the darkroom.
Biographies
Cat C Haines is a transsexual dyke, experimental and analogue filmmaker, and an activist|artist|academic weirdo currently pursuing a PhD in Media and Artistic Research at the University of Regina, on Treaty 4 territory. Her work explores how analogue and process filmmaking can act as both a metaphor and a material methodology towards transsexual re-embodiment and liberation.
