Join us on a magical journey of self-discovery through the dark, damp woods and treacherous terrain inhabited by queer friends, lovers, spectral voices, and park rangers alike. Enter landscapes both hyperlocal (shout outs to Hamilton, Ontario) and fantastic (your vampire bestie’s girlfriend, aka the moon) to question nature and what is allowed to be natural. Through an abundance of humour and sensory details, these films ground us in our bodies and encourage us to reclaim the environments often policed by malicious forces, both supernatural and real life.
After the screening, we’ll sit down with the eponymous filmmakers and stars of Gabby and Eleanor Go Up and Down the Mountain to chat about bike (mis)adventures, scraped hands, and inside jokes.

Shawna and Lorri take us through the wilds and show us what it takes to become a Lesbian Ranger. Beautifully shot footage and upbeat humour make us want to sign on.
Gabby and Eleanor Go Up and Down the Mountain is an experimental diary film which follows two trans women as they take a bike ride through the trails along the Niagara Escarpment in Hamilton, Ontario. Both women shoot footage of each other, joking and talking, as well as various sights that catch their eyes. The film is soundtracked by an original score improvised by Gabby and Eleanor themselves.

In this whimsical and sensual world, the Moon and a Little Vampire share a love story as intoxicating as it is impossible. The Moon petrifies with sorrow at the vast distance separating her from her beloved. The Little Vampire is then faced with a fateful choice : renounce his immortal soul to join his lover for one single night. He embarks on a journey strewn with tantalizing (or thorny) temptations and mischievous spells, all conspiring to lead him astray from his quest.
Biographies
Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan create smart and funny feminist performances, films, videos, artist’s books and public art projects. They have performed and exhibited throughout Canada, Japan, Europe, Australia, and the U.S. These collaborators since 1989 are infamous for pieces such as We’re Talking Vulva, A Day in the Life of a Bull-Dyke and Lesbian National Parks and Services.
Eleanor of Alexandria James Street Abrahams is a transfem multidisciplinary artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. Alongside her filmmaking endeavours, she does noise music/performance art as Hivemaker, was a part of the Toronto-based performance art collective High Strange, writes and performs poetry, and creates the Datapanik series of collage art zines. She is interested in the images and information that fall through the cracks.
Gabrielle Khangyi is a Hungarian-Sudanese multidisciplinary artist residing on Occupied Anishinaabe land. she spends most of her time writing short essays for her 275 instagram followers. when she isnt doing that she is composing ‘music’ or playing vanilla Skyrim like a boss 😎.
Francis Tomkins is a queer, chronically ill artist, zine-maker, and accessibility worker living in Tkaronto. Their zine practice focuses on perzines, connecting to community and resisting erasure through personal storytelling. They have worked in communications and accessibility roles at Tangled Art + Disability and StopGap Foundation, and as an accessibility consultant for various galleries, museums and independent artists and curators. Francis has a BFA in Cross-Disciplinary Arts: Publications from OCAD University (the closest thing you can get to a degree in zines).
Bande James Bond is a collective from Brussels with a desire to weave a queer and humorous gaze into the cinematic portrayal of sexuality. Its unique genre is a fantastical hybrid – a blend of erotica, drama, musical, and camp. Making cinema from scraps and papier-mâché, Bande James Bond seeks to achieve much with little, drawing inspiration from the enchanting allure of vampire B-movies and strange fairy tales to unleash its wildest fantasies. The collective believes that the joys of a light and blissful euphoria led by wondrous and poetic genre films are more vital than ever in these turbulent times.
